Meetup Recap

Recap for 4/12

Last meeting, Fedor (NCAE team captain)  recapped the competition by discussing the challenges the team faced, the solutions they came up with, what they learned for next year, and much more. Anthony and Ibrahim did a demo of one of the NCL challenges  and we officially announced the election results. Congratulations to all the new eboard members! It’s great seeing so many people who are passionate about getting more involved in the club.

We  also began forming teams ahead of the NCL team game. Remember,  the team game starts on April 22, 1:00 pm EDT and ends on April 24, 9:00 pm EDT. Team formation closes at 11:59pm on April 21, so start forming teams now! You do not have to participate for the entire duration of the competition. Do as many problems as you can.

Recap for 4/5

Hello everyone!

It was great seeing you all. For the new eboard members, welcome to the board and congratulations on being selected. We are excited to have you. For those who were not elected, fear not, we are still finalizing all the positions that will be open next semester and there are still a lot of ways that you can get involved in the club. Stay tuned updates in next week’s announcement.

Recap for 3/29

Hello everyone! We were so happy to see so many of you at yesterday’s meeting. You asked some great questions. A big thank you goes to Anthony and Brian (the founding members of the club), and Emily (a former president). We continue to be inspired by your journeys beyond the club and we are excited to see you all again in the future!

Some of their most common advice is as follows:

  • Network, network, network. Build your network while at school and in internships and don’t hesitate to reach out to SU alums. The alumni network is strong.
  • Prepare for opportunities. Doing things like going to competitions, practicing in the club, doing a project, or studying for a certification are all great ways to build experience and lay the groundwork for creating opportunities. They are also a great way to show employers that you are well rounded.
  • There are a lot of ways to advance in an IT/security career. Follow the path that is right for you and make sure it is sustainable. Hard work is good, but you need to take time to take care of yourself. You don’t want you to get brunt out when you reach your goal.

As a general reminder, club elections are next week. Come prepared to either vote or present yourself as a candidate. For those who have filled out the application form, you will receive an email soon detailing what our expectations are during the election process.

Meetup Recap for 2/01

Hey Everyone,

For this week’s meetup, we introduced everyone into the semester and teased the coming events/meetups. In addition, held a trivia on random topics including information security. For next’s week meetups, we will be sharing how to get involved in the EBoard, provide an overview of what competitions entail, share learning resources such as NCAE tutorials and NCL gymnasium and share information on technical cyber security practice sessions.

Meetup Recap of 11/16

Tonight we had Mike Lisi, professional pen tester, member of the white team at CNY hackathon, and one of organizers of NCAE Cybergames briefly speak about his experience starting in cybersecurity, getting certifications, and working in industry for a consulting firm and as an independent consultant/contractor.

We also learned how to setup, secure, and manage services in our virtual lab environment. We set up web (Apache), database (SQL), and DNS (allows internet) servers. For everyone who came tonight, good work! You did a great job and we all learned a lot.

As a reminder: we do NOT have a meeting next week. Our next meeting is after break on 11/30.

Meetup Recap for 11/09

Tonight we had Brian Garber (one of the founding members of the InfoSec club and a Google engineer) share his experience throughout his career. Thank you to Brian for giving us some of his time and answering our questions!  To get a recording of the full meeting, contact us at isc@syr.edu . Some of his advice (paraphrased) included:

  • How do I get noticed by big companies like Google?
    • Network with SU alumni and talk to people who currently work in the role you want to see what experience you need, what they do, and how they got their job.
  • How can I get experience?
    • Internships can be very useful to find your interests and get experience. Even relatively small environments can be a great place to start and get experience. However, internships are not the only place to get experience. Competitions and hackathons can make your resume stand out.

We also discussed CNY Hackathon and the NCL team game with a live demonstration of “Tom’s Login” from NCL. Last but certainly not least, congratulations to everyone who participated and keep up the good work! One of our NCL students finished in 20th place out of over 6000 competitors (top 0.333%!).
