Tonight we had Brian Garber (one of the founding members of the InfoSec club and a Google engineer) share his experience throughout his career. Thank you to Brian for giving us some of his time and answering our questions! To get a recording of the full meeting, contact us at isc@syr.edu . Some of his advice (paraphrased) included:
- How do I get noticed by big companies like Google?
- Network with SU alumni and talk to people who currently work in the role you want to see what experience you need, what they do, and how they got their job.
- How can I get experience?
- Internships can be very useful to find your interests and get experience. Even relatively small environments can be a great place to start and get experience. However, internships are not the only place to get experience. Competitions and hackathons can make your resume stand out.
We also discussed CNY Hackathon and the NCL team game with a live demonstration of “Tom’s Login” from NCL. Last but certainly not least, congratulations to everyone who participated and keep up the good work! One of our NCL students finished in 20th place out of over 6000 competitors (top 0.333%!).
