Hey everyone. We hope you enjoyed this meeting. Next week will be the last meeting of the semester, in order to let everyone focus on exams and other obligations, but that doesn’t mean the club won’t be active at all. We’re still working on the website, trying to create challenges so you can remain engaged and learn over winter break if you want. We recommend participating in this if you want to do CCDC next semester, as we are still looking to fill the team up and this would be a great way to prepare yourself. I will be posting an Google Sheets with a list of topics, and you can pick whatever topics you want (or add any you think are missing). We will also be attaching Jovanni notes from CNY Hackathon, and will save it on the Practice Cybersecurity page to prep for next CNY Hackathon. Also, for those participating in CNY Hackathon, good luck! If you’re registered, you should be getting an email by tomorrow about the exact details of the infrastructure. There will be some resources posted below for you to prepare for the competition. There are also the challenges in the meeting presentation you can use to test your skills, but you can do your own research as well! Hey guys. We hope you all enjoyed the last meeting, and have been messing around with Metasploitable. It’s a great way to learn about exploiting vulnerabilities. And don’t forget to register for CNY Hackathon, and fill out the headcount form when you do so Jake can more efficiently match you all with good team members. I also forgot to mention this during the club meeting, but Anthony brought to my attention an intercollegiate Capture The Flag-style competition being hosted by Hack the Box. If you don’t remember, that’s the online platform with various challenges to solve and VMs to break into in order to improve your skills. The qualifier CTF is on Friday, November 20th, so you can practice for a couple weeks after CNY Hackathon, if you choose to. More details can be found on the website. Now, if you haven’t already gotten your resume in order, you’d better do so soon, as next week, Kameron Scott, an InfoSec Club alumni, will be coming to talk about internships and full time positions with IBM’s Security Services department. This can be a great opportunity to get your foot in the door of a top company, so make sure you come with questions for Kameron! Can’t wait to see you all next week.

Jake, one of the event coordinators from Mohawk Valley Community College, will be coming next week to tell us more about the event. They would really like to see SU’s involvement this year in the event, so make sure you’re here to hear about it. I will also put a link to the recording of the club Zoom session. You have to sign in to your SU Zoom account to view them. Here are instructions on how to do it. We hope you all enjoyed the last meeting and are getting into the NCL preseason. Don’t forget to register for the Hacker Halted conference, and any of the competitions that you are interested in participating in (one of them has a $450 gift card prize). And definitely register for CNY Hackathon, a cyber competition in which you work to keep your network servers up and secure while the red teams tries to break into them. This is the perfect competition for beginners, as you will be placed with team members with experience. This is something you can’t miss out on so much sure you sign up right now! It only takes 2 minutes!

We hope you guys enjoyed the last meeting! No one has emailed us yet about reaching level 11 of the Bandit CTF, so the Raspberry Pi is still up for grabs! And when you complete the Bandit CTF, check out the other wargames on the website, they can really help with understanding security in Linux. And don’t forget about the NCL Preseason, it’s starting next Monday. If you’re participating in the Individual Game, this is necessary to take part in. Participation in the Preseason is required to be a ranked player, making you eligible to win prizes, obtain a Scouting Report, and represent your school in the Cyber Power Rankings. So don’t miss out!

As a reminder, if you don’t want to miss one of the most interactive cybersecurity conferences around, then you don’t want to miss Hacker Halted. It runs from Monday, October 19th – Friday, October 23, so there will be ample opportunity to see what’s going on. They’re releasing more of the agenda as the date comes up, and there’s already cool activities like the Secure Code Warrior CTF. and the Hacker Jeopardy game where you can win a $450 gift card! Going to the conference also supports the club when those who go share the knowledge they learn there with the rest of the club, so let’s help our fellow members. Best of all, it’s free!

And finally, just when you thought we ran out of competitions, another one gets announced. The InfoSec Club has been attending CNY Hackathon for years now, as it is THE competition to go to for first timers. Not only is there a red team vs blue team aspect in which you have to keep your servers up, there are also trivia CTF and many other challenges to do for those who aren’t familiar with server technologies such as SSH, FTP, HTTP, etc. You sign up individually and will get put into a team based on skill level (you’ll likely be working with all non-SU students), so there is guaranteed to be a few people on your team who know what they’re doing. We know that these competitions can seem intimidating, but they really are the best way to get practical experience in cybersecurity, and the best way to know if this is for you. Even if you’re doing NCL and Hivestorm, you’re going to want to sign up for this. CNY Hackthon registration opens next Monday, October 12th, it’s not open to register yet. But make sure to register ASAP on Monday, as the limit is 100 participants, and for the last CNY Hackathons we have registered too late. We don’t want that to happen again, so register on Monday!!
